Course Objectives To provide preliminary information on the characterization and degradation processes of traditional building materials for architectural specialists and to provide them the necessary laboratory experience.
Course Description The course aims to convey information about the characterization of traditional materials and the definition of deterioration processes. Both theoretical knowledge transfer and experimental studies are included in the course. Experimental studies include sampling methods from architectural surfaces, determination of physical and mechanical properties of porous building materials, movement of salts, salt crystallization cycles, qualitative analysis of water-soluble salts, characterization of traditional mortars and plasters, mixture designs for repair mortars, building blocks cleaning and consolidation of broken stones.
