Course Objectives
Providing a theoretical education for students in gradute studies of architectural conservation that will comprehend the scientific foundations of the relevant subjects on the deterioration environments of traditional building materials, the causes and processes of deterioration, and the morphology of deterioration, and in the same way, the theoretical presentation of the scientific principles that should be followed in practices such as cleaning, consolidation and integration.
Course Description
Movement of water in liquid and gaseous form in porous building materials; the resulting mechanical stresses; crystallization cycles of water soluble salts and hydrated salts; biological deterioration; traditional binders, mortars, plasters and conservation mortars; stone cleaning methods; consolidation, bonding and plastic repair methods; clay, adobe and bricks; stone conservation and repair techniques; degradation and conservation of organic materials such as wood, paper and textiles.
