Course Objectives

1. To gain a detailed knowledge of nano-scale surface modification of textile materials and become familiar with nano-scale surface functionalization techniques of textile materials.
2. To acquire an understanding of nano-scale surface characterization methods of textile materials
3. To evaluate the use of surface modification techniques in different end uses for various options of textile materials
4. To gain information on nanofibers, electrospinning of nanofibers and the applications of nanofibers.
5. To have knowledge on nano polymer composite: production, property analyses and application areas

Course Description

Introduction to surface modification techniques of textile materials. Surface characterization methods of textile materials. Surface functionalization of textile materials by physical vapor deposition. Surface grafting of textile materials, Surface modification of textile materials by electroless deposition. Surface functionalization of textile materials by chemical vapor deposition. Surface modification of textile materials by layer-by-layer deposition methods. Surface modification of textile materials by plasma treatments. Surface modification of textile materials with nanoparticles (advanced coatings and functional finishes). Nanofibers, definition, properties, nanofiber technology. Nanofiber production methods. Electrospinning method, the effect of process parameters on fiber formation, diameter and morphology. Characterization of electro spun nanofibers; physical and chemical characterization. Applications of nanofibers; electronics, filtration, tissue regeneration, protective clothing, etc. Nano polymer composite: production, property analyses and application areas.
