Course Objectives 1. To give information about the design factors affecting development of e-textiles and
wearable computing systems
2. To introduce conductive yarn-like and fabric based structures used in e-textiles and give
information about their electrical, morphological and electromechanical properties
3. To teach design and manufacturing processes and technologies for development of textile
based sensors, textile based actuators and textile based power systems
4. To provide information about formation of electrical circuits in e-textiles, data transfer in
wired and wireless communication and the integration methods of micro-electronics to
textile structures
5. To examine the applications of e-textiles and wearable electronics in military, healtcare,
civil and geotextile systems
Course Description Design factors affecting development of e-textiles and wearable computing systems. Conductive
yarn-like and fabric based structures used in e-textiles. Design and manufacturing processes and
technologies for development of textile based sensors, textile based actuators and textile based
power systems. Formation of electrical circuits in e-textiles, data transfer in wired and wireless
communication. Integration methods of micro-electronics to textile structures.Joining technologies
and interconnection solutions for e-textiles. Fabric based antennas for wireless communication in
textiles. Wearable/wireless body sensor networks in healthcare applications. Electronic textiles
and wearable technologies in military applications. Embodying intelligence in textile based civil
and geotechnical infrastructures
Course Outcomes At the end of the course, the students will have:
I. An ability to discuss the design factors and technologies affecting development of e-textiles
and wearable computing systems
II. An ability to identify conductive yarn-like and fabric based structures suitable for e-textiles
and their electrical, morphological and electromechanical properties
III. An ability to conceptually design the electrical circuits in e-textiles using micro-electronics,
and have knowledge of data transfer in wired and wireless communication
IV. An ability to understand development concept of textile based sensors, textile based
actuators and textile based power systems
V. The knowledge of applications of e-textiles and wearable electronics in military, healtcare,
civil and geotextile systems
VI. The ability to identify and apply correct materials and technologies for development of etextiles
structures and wearable electronics.
VII. The ability to think analytically to indetify end-user needs for activity related challenges in
e-textiles and wearable electronic product design
