MBL 514E - Digital Archite.Design Studio

Course Objectives

? To use computational methods for generating innovative, creative and original architectural design solutions;
? To acknowledge, evaluate and use architectural design computing processes, tools, methods and approaches.
? To interpret the concept of sustainability from a new perspective.

Course Description

Biomimicry is a research field, which aims to investigate formations and organizations found in nature that are complex and efficient. DADS 2020-2021 Spring Term project is titled Digital vs. Analogue Applications by using Natural Systems and referencing work in the intersection of computational design, digital fabrication, biomimetic design and sustainability. The project brief is aligned with the Spirala Ecological Village Competition, by focusing on self-development and communication with nature and located in Northern Portugal.

The settlement will consist of 20 buildings, in which residents live and work together. The program elements such as the village and community farm will be a place for people to connect with nature. The principles of biomimetic design systems should be evaluated with sustainable design solutions. Series of tools, methods and approaches for solving architectural design problems by means of computational methods will be discussed.
