Course Objectives
The aim of this course is to provide students with a framework on the real-life processes and theories of globalisation, regional development, and social and environmental sustainability while guiding their learning through reading landmark articles in the field and conducting research on a topic of their choice.
Course Description
This course examines the topics of globalisation, regional development, and social and environmental sustainability at the intersection of economics, economic geography, and political economy. The course is structured around three paradigms in these disciplines: neoclassical, neo-institutionalist, and Marxist. The historical scope of the course covers the period after 1971, and its geographical scope encompasses the entire world, primarily focusing on theories and data published in English. The first section examines the post-1971 period when neoclassical theory guided structural change; the second section examines the post-1997/2008 period when the neo-institutionalist theory addressed socio-economic and environmental crisis, and the third section examines the Marxist theory that offers an alternative approach. The course consists of lectures, article analyses, and student research guided by the instructor with the results discussed by the students.
