Course Objectives
1. To teach effective and determining social, cultural, economic, structural and process parameters of denim fabric design and manufacture, and their interactions, in a way which makes the evaluation and interpretation of them possible with a wide perspective and with a comparative and critical view.
2. To give the knowledge about quality control and quality standards of denim production
3. To teach the technical and technological knowledge needed to design of processes in denim production by fulfilling the expectations and solving the problems.
4. To give the knowledge about advanced and innovative denim applications.
Course Description
Definition, history and evolution of denim fabric. The role of denim and jeans in the fashion industry. Raw materials (fibers), yarns, constructions used in denim fabric design and manufacture. Denim production processes and technologies. Joining techniques for denim jeans. Quality control, quality standards and comfort aspects of denim fabrics. Washing of denim garments and the factors affecting the washing effect. Novel applications, environmental aspects and sustainability in the denim industry.
Course Outcomes
At the end of the course, the students will have:
I. Information about definitions, history and evolution of denim,
II. A critical point of view and an interpreting ability about social, structural, economic influences of denim products on society and fashion industry,
III. The ability to determine both structural and process parameters of denim fabric design and manufacture which meet the expectations,
IV. The ability to determine the quality and comfort expectations and to decide appropriate procedure for testing the quality of denim,
V. The ability to determine washing techniques and parameters for attaining special visual effects to denim garments,
VI. The knowledge and understanding about novel applications, environmental aspects and sustainability in the denim industry and the ability to determine a research topic.
