Course Objectives • To provide students understanding of the operation and system-level design of biometric systems
• To provide students understanding of biometric data processing, test results and algorithms,
• To consider socio-legal issues.
Course Description This course presents the principles of operation, design, testing, and implementation of the biometric systems. Major and emerging biometric technologies (fingerprint, face, hand, iris, etc.), testing and evaluation will be discussed. Students will be introduced to a variety of methods used for processing data from various biometrics and to statistical methods.
Course Outcomes M.Sc./Ph.D. students who successfully pass this course gain knowledge, skill and competency in the following subjects;
I. Understand the characteristics of a useful biometric
II. Know how biometric characteristics are measured
III. Be familiar with the technologies used to measure the biometric
IV. Be able to broadly assess a biometric system technology for a given application
V. Understand the limitations of present biometric technologies and be aware of emerging technologies
VI. Be aware of the legal, social, and ethical concerns regarding application of biometric systems.
