Course Objectives
To provide students information on surface chemistry, interfaces, contact angle, electrical double layer, surface charge.
To provide information about formation of a new phase, interparticle forces, surfaces of solids, contact angle and flotation.
Course Description
Basic concepts; Introduction to dispersion systems; Surface activity-surface tension-capillarity; Emulsion theory; Thermodynamics of liquid interfaces; Electrical aspects of surface chemistry-electrical double layer; Flocculation; Long-range forces-Lifshitz and DLVO theories; Surfaces of solids; Formation of a new phase-nucleation and crystal growth; Solid-liquid interfaces-Contact angle and flotation.
Course Outcomes
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the surface chemistry, interfaces, surface tension, contact angle, capillarity, adsorption at the interfaces.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of the thermodynamics of liquid interfaces, electrical double layer, formation of a new phase.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of the thermodynamics of liquid interfaces, electrical double layer, formation of a new phase.
4. Design the separation processes based on the physicochemical properties of the compounds such as surface tension and surface charge.
5. Demonstrate knowledge about techniques to analyze surface chemistries.
6. Demonstrate knowledge about surface chemistry applications in different industries.
