PEM 512 - Pedestrian Spaces

Course Objectives

• To discuss the relations of social, economic, cultural and spatial impacts on public places
• To introduce the relations of the city and its public places, in terms of man-environment interaction
• To introduce the new paradigms which focus on critical reading of the pedestrian point of view in city

Course Description

Public Places. The concept of perception, cognition, image, identity and symbolism in urban public areas. History of pedesterianization movement and its policy. Relationships between pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Streets, squares and primary pedestrian areas. Cowered and controlled pedestrian places. Design principles of pedestrian places. Case studies about the subject.
