Course Objectives
To explore the importance of landscape in global urbanizaiton
To increase awareness of green movement in intense urbanization
To introduce sustainability and green urbanism on urban scale
To gain experience about green urbanism through field projects
Course Description
Global urbanization, reasons for urbanizations, urbanization in developing countries and developed countries; Sustainability on urban scale and the role of green urbanism; The components of sprawl and smart growth; Environment, urban-green density, land use, transportation and governance differences and how those indicators have shaped the development of cities; Transportation networks (Rail line and trail, road and vehicle, bicycle ways, pedestrianized ways); Importance of water networks in planning (Shoreline, river, stream, wetland, ground and underground water); The origin of green system concept, City Beautiful Movement; Greenway and greenbelts, open-space types; Importance of degraded lands in green urbanism context (Post-industrial sites); Importance of degraded lands in green urbanism context (Waste disposal and mining areas); Importance of degraded lands in green urbanism context and design ; Prospects for green urbanistic changes in USA; Prospects for green urbanistic changes in European cities; Prospects for green urbanistic changes in Istanbul
Course Outcomes
Comprehensive knowledge on sustainability, environmental movement and current state of nature in order to develop a background and critical viewpoint from which to look at the environmental impact of cities
Ability to comprehend the role of green urbanism to decrease the effects of climate change on cities to create healthier environment
Comprehensive knowledge on infrastructural and governance requirements to achieve green urbanism
Comprehensive knowledge on different green movements like green ways, green belts.
Ability to critical and historically informed rereading of the environmental and social aspirations of modernist urbanism

Comprehensive knowledge on recovering degraded areas through green urbanism
