Course Objectives
1. Understanding the satellite remote sensing (technology, advantages, limitations).
2. Understanding the physical basis of satellite remote sensing.
3. Recognizing the cloud characteristics by using different observation frequencies.
4. Understanding the potential of satellite data for operational meteorology and climatology.
5. A quick look on the future satellite missions.
Course Description
The course focuses on applications of remote sensing of the atmosphere using satellite observations, including cloud identification and precipitation retrievals. The course also teaches the use of satellite retrieval methods and the image interpretation meteorological satellites.
Course Outcomes
1. Knowledge on weather satellites (orbits, platforms, technicalities).
2. Fundamentals of the satellite remote sensing.
3. Physical basis of the satellite remote sensing theory.
4. Satellite remote sensing of the atmosphere and clouds.
5. Selective frequencies for the precipitation retrievals (rain, snow, hail).
6. Fundamentals of satellite image interpretation.
7. Technical basis of satellite sensors.
8. Long-term satellite dataset for hydrometeorology and climatology.
