Course Objectives 1. The definition of the concept of Modern Architecture and its sub-styles and genres,
2. Internationally accepted criteria in the conservation of Modern Architectural Heritage,
3. Methods of intervention in the conservation of Modern Architectural Heritage with case studies,
4. Discussions on and critical evaluation of case studies.
Course Description Modernism in architecture: concepts, origin, styles and genres, effect of architectural and urban-scape; the acceptance of the works of Modern Architecture as cultural property, criteria for selection and designation, conservation and restoration approaches; methods of intervention
Course Outcomes Doctoral students who successfully pass this course gain the following knowledge, skills and proficiencies:
1. Grasping the inter-disciplinary interaction related to one’s area; reaching original results by using the specialistic knowledge in analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating new and complex ideas (ii).
2. The ability to critically analyze, synthesize and evaluate the new and complex ideas (v).
3. Acquiring the most developed skills about using the research methods in studies in the related area (vi).
4. Developing area-related new ideas and methods by making use of high level intellectual processes such as creative and critical thinking, problem solving and decision making (x).
5. Proficiency in a foreign language –at least European Language Portfolio C1 Level- and establishing written, oral and visual communication and developing argumentation skills with that language (xiii).
6. Contributing to the society’s state and progress towards being an information society by announcing and promoting the technological, scientific and social developments in one’s area (xiv).
7. Contributing to the solution of area-related social, scientific, cultural and ethical problems and promoting the development of these values (xvi).
