Course Objectives
1- To teach the fundementals of mecanics of deformable bodies.
2- To apply the elasticity equations to special problems such as (crack, hole).
Course Description
Tensor Analysis; Motion and Deformations; Kinematics of Deformations, Strain Displacement
Relations; Strain Tensor; Dynamics: Forces and Stress; Stress Tensor; Principal Stresses; The
Principal of Virtual Work; Constitutive Equations; Linear Elasticity; Variational Theorems; Airy s
Stress Function; Stress Concentration Problems at Holes, Corners, and Crack Tips.
Course Outcomes
M.Sc./Ph.D. students who successfully pass this course gain knowledge, skill and competency in
the following subjects;
1- To use the tensor s and curvilinear coordinates in continuum mechanics.
2- To derive and apply the fundamental equations of linear elasticity
3- To learn and to use the variational theorems and virtual works principles
4- To apply the Airy’s stress functions to specific types of problems
5- To solve the special type of problems by using the general elasticity equations
