Course Objectives
In this course, we aim to:
1) Establish a working theoretical knowledge of crystal structures, lattice vibrations, Sommerfeld free-electron models, electron energy bands, Fermi surface, semi-classical model of electron dynamics (theory)
2) Describe the electronic structure and transport, optical, and magnetic properties of metals, insulators, semiconductors, and superconductors, and identify their device applications (applications)
Course Description
Elementary crystal structure; the reciprocal lattice; lattice dynamics and phonons; thermal properties of materials; electron gas; Fermi-Dirac statistics and the Fermi surface; band theory, semiconductor physics and properties, semiconductor devices.
