Course Objectives 1. To provide a basic understanding of key concepts in membrane technologies
2. To demonstrate the role of polymer science and engineering applied to membrane technologies
3. To provide adequate theoretical and practical knowledge to make informed decisions on the functioning and applications of membrane processes
4. To promote critical thinking about some important, current technological issues in membrane science and technology
Course Description Membrane technology involves various disciplines such as chemical engineering, chemistry, polymer science and engineering, and material science and engineering. By manipulating material properties membranes can be tailor-made for specific separation tasks and conditions. Polymer and polymer composite membranes comprise a large portion of the commercial membranes used today. The main objective of this course is to give a broad overview of the many aspects of membrane technology. Emphasis will be on polymer based membranes. Coverage includes fundamentals of transport in porous and non-porous membranes, membrane materials, properties of polymer membranes, membrane preparation and characterization, basics of the most important membrane processes and their applications.
Course Outcomes Upon succesful completion of this course, students will:
1. Define, describe, and apply the basic concepts of membrane technology.
2. Demonstrate a knowledge of various types of membrane processes and their applications.
3. Determine the operational requirements for successful implementation of membrane based solutions.
4. Demonstrate a knowledge of simple membrane fabrication/manufacturing processes and membrane characterization.
5. Analyze and evaluate the relationship between material and chemical properties of membranes and their separation performance.
6. Distinguish the limitations of membrane technology for specific applications.
7. Discuss the role of polymer science and engineering in membrane science and technology.
8. Gain experience in writing coherent, well-supported technical reports and technical oral presentation.
