Course Objectives i) The objectives of the course are to demonstrate the application areas of new technologies such as
Remote Sensing and GIS and the model used for the solution of coastal engineering problems and
issues in World and Turkey.
ii) It is aimed to improve the skills for analyzing and application of the methods by evaluating
advantages and disadvantages of the new technologies such as RS and GIS in coastal engineering
with the different case studies presented.
Course Description Course outline, Maps and their use in coastal engineering, Data types used in coastal engineering, Spatial
Data collecting techniques: Conventional maps, digitizing, scanning, Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing,
GPS and surveying techniques, Geographic Information Systems, Definition of Projects and information
about available software, Related techniques and disciplines with Geographic Information Systems,
Comparisons of GIS software, Data structures and Databases, Digital Terrain Models, Producing thematic
maps for different purposes, Completed studies and examples, Student Presentations and Assessments and
Overview.
