Course Objectives
This course prepares students to understand the risk and rewards associated with investing in financing both residential and commercial real estate. Concepts and techniques included in the courses and problem sets are used in many careers related to real estate. These include investing, development financing, appraising, consulting, managing real estate portfolios, leasing, managing property, analyzing site locations and managing corporate real estate. This course is also relevant to students who want better understand real estate for their own personal investment and financing decisions.
Course Description
• To introduce real estate finance, valuation, feasibility and highest and best use (HBU) studies
• To introduce urban economics and relationship with real estate markets
• To introduce leverage and mortgage system, mortgage calculations
• To introduce financing real estate project and decision making criteria

Required Facilities
A financial calculator is required, of a type that can do discounted cash flow and internal rate of return calculations (DCF, IRR). The Hewlett-Packard HP-10B and Texas Instruments BA II Plus will be used for in-class examples.
