Course Objectives 1. Give basic information about the electrical power systems for railway vehicles,
2. Give general information about the electrical power distribution in the railway systems,
3. Give basic information about the protection of the railway systems against over-voltage and current,
4. Give basic information about the power quality,
5. Give basic information about the electromagnetic compatibility,
6. Give basic information about the cathodic protection.
Course Description Components of electrical power systems for railway systems: Power supply center, distribution system (overhead lines, poles, third rail, cabling), load flow, voltage drop, switching, measurement systems;
Protection of power systems against overvoltage, over-current, stray currents;
Reactive power compensation;
Harmonics and filtering;
Electromagnetic compatibility: Screening, grounding;
Cathodic protection.
Course Outcomes Students who successfully complete this course obtains fundamental information and ability to use on
1. Basic information about the electrical power systems for railway vehicles,
2. Electrical system components of railways,
3. Basic information about the power quality for railway systems,
4. Design and analysis of the power systems for railway systems.
