Course Objectives 1. To understand antimicrobial host defense peptites
2. To understand synthesis and characterization of antimicrobial polymers
3. How to make surface coating and sterilization
4. To look into Industrial applications (water, textile, food industry etc.)
5. To define instrumental methods to understand bacteria/polymer interaction
Course Description Infectious disease is a critically important global healthcare issue. The rapid development of bacterial resistance, to even our most powerful antibiotics, is increasing at an alarming rate. New antimicrobial agents and steril surfaces that show broad spectrum activity and long range lasting should have developed and applied in the field to prevent secondary infection. In this course syntesis and applications of antimicrobial polymers and nanocomposites will be discussed.
Course Outcomes Students who successfully pass this course will gain knowledge about the following subjects:

1. Natural antimicrobial polymers
2. Synthesis and characterization of antimicrobial polymers.
3. Mimicry of host defense peptites by oligomers and polymers (structures, properties, importance of hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance, structure and activity relationship)
4. Antimicrobial nanoparticles (Synthesis of Ag+, TiO2, ZnO based nanoparticles, synthesis of colloidal structure of polymer containing nanoparticles and surface applications)
5. Investigate the mechanism of bacteria and antimicrobial polymer interaction by using instrumental techniques
6. Preparation sterile surfaces and industrial applications
Pre-requisite(s) There is no pre-requisite.
Required Facilities
