Course Objectives 1) To provide the concepts for reinforced shallow and deep concrete foundations,
2) To provide design information for civil engineering foundation applications,
3) To gain experience in engineering design of foundation systems,
4) To develop the students’ ability to use computers, do research and establish written and oral communication.
Course Description General definitions, Classification of foundations, General view to the shallow foundations, Spread foundations, The single foundations, Special cases in the single foundations, Bi-axially loaded single rectangular foundations, Socked foundations for prefabricated columns, Circular foundations, The single foundations in general shape, Cantilever foundations, One-way continuous foundations, Rigid foundation, Beams on elastic foundations, Energy methods in the one-way continuous foundations, Numerical solution methods, One-way continuous foundations supporting columns and wall, Considering the effect of superstructures, The reduction of adverse effect on the superstructure due to differential settlement at the noodle points of foundation, Special cases in the one-way continuous foundations supporting columns and wall, Two-way continuous foundations, Approximate solutions, Force Method Solutions, Matrices-Displacement Method Solutions, Mat foundations, Flat and ribbed mat foundations, Definitions, Solution methods, The solution of ribbed mat foundations by using tables based on Orthotropic Plate Theory, Numerical solution methods for mat foundations, Procedures that idealize behavior of foundation soil as close to reality as possible, Procedures based on stress distribution in half space, Foundations resting on soil with two parameter, Deep foundations, General view to the deep foundations, Reinforced concrete retaining walls used as foundation structure, Cassion foundations, Solution methods for pile foundations.
Course Outcomes Students completing this course will be able to:
1. Learn about classification and behavior of concrete foundations.
2. Calculate design of the shallow foundations (wall, single, cantilever, circular, one way continuous, two way continuous foundations).
3. Calculate design of mat (flat and ribbed) foundations.
4. Calculate design of deep foundations, pile foundations.
5. Learn about application of the code requirements and construction details.
