Course Objectives The primary aim of this course is to support students in developing their reading and writing skills concurrently and reinforce students’ perception of the reading and writing link in order to enhance their ability to read academic texts more effectively and compose academic essays with coherent content and structure.
Reading skills: 1. Techniques for efficient reading, 2. Identifying main ideas, 3. Examining the writer’s perspective and tone, 4. Finding and interrelating relevant information, 5. Distinguishing between general and specific information, 6. Identifying causes and effects of a phenomenon, 7. Reading and analyzing the pros and cons of a controversial issue, 8. Identifying key terms related to the topic within a text, 9. Enhancing academic vocabulary as well as critical thinking, analysis, and synthesis skills through reading
Writing skills: 1. Note taking, 2. Summarizing, 3. Categorizing and organizing information, 4. Developing outlines, 5. Writing thesis statements and topic sentences, 6. Composing cause-and-effect paragraphs by following a specific format, 7. Writing argumentative essays within a structured format, 8. Supporting main ideas in essays with findings obtained through academic text analysis, 9. Employing an academic tone, selecting vocabulary appropriate to the topic, and using necessary transition and linking expressions.
Speaking Skills: 1. Engaging in group work within the classroom, 2. Participating in group-based idea development activities, and 3. Contributing to the development of speaking skills by discussing developed ideas during class discussions.
Course Description In ING 112, students develop essential academic skills in applying effective reading strategies, analyzing sources, identifying relevant information, and thinking critically. They practice these skills and enhance their academic writing through structured activities such as reading and analyzing texts to gather information, planning their writing, writing in alignment with their plan, and revising their written work. Emphasizing the integration of academic reading and writing skills, the course guides students in producing paragraphs and essays that adhere to academic writing conventions in both assignments and exams. Students also participate in in-class discussions based on the materials they have read.
Course Outcomes Students who pass the course satisfactorily can:
1. Identify the main ideas in an academic text and analyze the author’s perspective and tone.
2. Elicit relevant information from academic texts to support their writing and interpret data presented in graphs.
3. Support their written work by appropriately citing sources in accordance with academic writing conventions.
4. Organize academic texts effectively - structuring thesis statements, paragraphs, and overall content - and develop comprehensive writing plans.
5. Read, plan, and write about a topic by analyzing a cause-and-effect relationship using appropriate vocabulary and sentence structures to express these connections.
6. Analyze controversial issues within an organized framework and engage in classroom discussions in group settings, utilizing language that reflects the argumentative genre
7. Compose academic essays on controversial topics using proper academic structure and style.
8. Critically evaluate academic texts.

3. During the conduct of the lesson, computers are used for lectures.
Other HOMEWORK 1: Students write a paragraph that evaluates their knowledge and skills, such as text analysis, critical thinking, selecting information, borrowing information, and interpreting graphics, following academic writing and citation rules.
HOMEWORK 2. Students read about a controversial topic, plan/outline, write an argumentative essay, do self-evaluation and peer-checking.
