Course Objectives
This course aims to enhance students’ reading and writing skills simultaneously;
reinforces students’ perception of the reading-writing link, enabling them to decipher
academic texts more efficiently; teaches them to write academic paragraphs and
argumentative essays by implementing APA in-text citation rules to avoid plagiarism.
Course Description
Reading and analyzing outside sources and eliciting proper information by
differentiating general from specific data, and developing academic writing skills by
including proper in-text citation (direct quotation and paraphrase) based on APA citation
rules, critical thinking, planning, drafting and editing, interpreting charts and graphs,
participating in in-class discussions of the reading materials
Course Outcomes
Students who pass the course satisfactorily can:
1. Identify the main points, analyze the view and the tone of the text, and
distinguish the general information from the specific one
2. Elicit relevant information from an outside source to support their ideas
3. Follow the academic writing rules and support their ideas in their writing by
referring to an outside source using direct quoting, paraphrasing, and
summarising methods and applying APA in-text citation rules
4. Identify unity and coherence in given texts and apply them in their written or
oral products.
5. Use the relevant vocabulary and structures reflecting different opinions in their
written and oral products
6. Avoid plagiarism and meet the requirements of academic integrity in their oral
presentations and written products.
7. Interpret and use figures and tables from academic sources in their oral
presentations and written products using appropriate terminology.
Pre-requisite(s)
Passing the ITU School of Foreign Languages English Preparatory School Proficiency
Exam with a score of 75 and above score or passing the ING 100 course with a minimum
DD.
