Course Objectives This course aims;
1. to gain a deeper understanding of the philosophy of art and developing students’ abilities to
think critically and analytically about art related issues,
2. to develop the ability to think theoretically and conceptually,
3. to develop the ability to communicate and discuss issues effectively,
4. to develop the ability to read and understand texts, make research and write,
5. to gain the capacity to locate and evaluate engineering problems in their social contexts.
Course Description This course is intended to be a general introduction to the major theories, concepts and issues
encountered in the Philosophy of Art. It will critically examine compare, contrast and asses
philosophical arguments within the context of the various essays written by various philosophers.
This course will address the following questions: “What is art?” “What defines art or what makes
an artwork an artwork?” “What are aesthetic qualities?” “What are meanings of aesthetic taste,
attitude and experience?” “Are aesthetic judgments merely subjective expressions?” “Is there
any relationship between reality and representation in art?”
Course Outcomes Students who pass this course will be able to:
I. understand and employ and key aesthetic theories and concepts
II. think theoretically and conceptually,
III. communicate and discuss issues effectively,
IV. read and understand texts, make research and write,
V. locate and evaluate engineering problems in their social contexts.
