Course Description Paleoclimatology is the study of changes in climate taken on the scale of the entire history of Earth. It uses a variety of proxy methods from the Earth and life sciences to obtain data previously preserved within rocks, sediments, ice sheets, tree rings, corals, shells and microfossils; it then uses these records to determine the past states of the Earth's various climate regions and its atmospheric system. Studies of past changes in the environment and biodiversity often reflect on the current situation, and specifically the impact of climate on mass extinctions and biotic recovery.
Course Outcomes Students who take this course gain knowledge, skills and proficiency in the following subjects
1. The reasons of the climate change, how did the climate change in the past; dating methods;
2. Ice core theory, how are they obtained?, paleoclimate reconstructions from ice cores;
3. Oxygen isotope chronology; the relationship between 18-O in sea water and in the atmosphere;
4. How do glaciers form? what are their relationship between the climate change;
5. Lake level changes and their effects on the water balance;
6. What is pollen? How do they spread? Paleoclimate reconstructions from pollen studies;
7. Tree ring data. Climate reconstructions from tree rings and from instrumental records.
