Course Objectives
To gain a qualitative and quantitative understanding of fundamental scientific principles behind climate change and global warming
To gain a qualitative and quantitative understanding of the impacts of climate change and how to deal with the challenges presented by climate change
To learn about the international institutions and treaties related with climate change
Course Description
Anthropogenic climate change represents one of the most important environmental challenges of our time. In order to understand its environmental, economic, and societal implications, one should have adequate knowledge about the basic underlying science. This course aims to first teach the fundamental scientific principles behind climate change, which involve subjects of atmospheric science and climatology, as well as some aspects of the physical and biological sciences. After a firm grounding in the basic science is established, other issues involving climate change impacts and the issue of mitigation (solutions to dealing with the challenges presented by climate change) are explored.
Course Outcomes
M.Sc. students who take this course gain knowledge, skills and proficiency in the following subjects
1. Distinguish the factors governing anthropogenic climate change from natural climate variability
2. Learn the human-caused changes in the climates of the world and Turkey
3. Learn about how the climate change projections are obtained using global and regional climate models and emission scenarios
4. Learn about the future changes (projections) in the climates of the world and Turkey
5. Gain knowledge about the climate change impacts, adaptation and mitigation
6. Gain knowledge about the climate change related institutions, treaties and meetings
