Course Objectives Understanding the control mechanisms that govern detritic sedimentary systems
- Interpretation of depositional environments using facies models
- Basinward correlation of sedimentary systems
- Sequence stratigraphic applications
Course Description Facies characteristics, facies model concepts, sedimentary environments. Fluvial, alluvial
fan, fan-delta and deltaic systems, eolian, glacial, lacustrine, lagoonal and tidal flat
depositional environments, beach, storm and tsunami deposits, shelf clastics. principles of
sequence stratigraphy.
Course Outcomes PhD students who take this course gain knowledge, skills and proficiency in the following
subjects
- Recognize the depositional environments of sedimentary units
- Correlate units within a basin
- Gain basic knowledge important for oil industry
- Sequence stratigraphic applications
