JDM 553E - Magmatic Processes

Course Objectives

The main objective of this course is to investigate the effects of the magmatic processes on magma chemistry and petrology of the rocks together with graduate students by systematically examining those processes that lead to the differentiation of magmas within the scope of the available literature resources.
To teach students how to distinguish magmatic processes from each other and evaluate the impact and importance of these processes in a magmatic system by practicing on real data using alternative numerical model studies based on the geochemical data in question.
To provide the students with an understanding of the logical sequence followed by examining the articles on magmatic systems in which various magmatic processes are well defined & separated from each other.
To provide students with geochemical data whose origins they do not know, and to enable them to test different magmatic processes using numerical models on real data. Thus, ensuring that they acquire the necessary knowledge about the approach to magmatic processes.

Course Description

It covers the stages that magma goes through from the depths of the mantle/crust to the surface, with special reference to the processes, variables, and conditions that are effective during magma evolution.
It covers the stages in which magma moves from the depths of the mantle/crust -where it is generated- to the surface, with special reference to the processes, variables, and conditions that are effective during the evolution of magma.
It also includes the examination and use of petrological modeling software available in the literature and the comparison of model results with field and petrographic observations.
The course also covers the use of the results from these petrological approaches in the interpretation of the geodynamic setting in which magmas evolved.
