Course Objectives This course explores aspects of the science of atmospheric pollution, looking at issues such as atmospheric composition, monitoring acidic deposition, and urban air quality. The objective of the course is mainly to provide the attendants with concept physical and chemical fundamentals, and equip the students with necessary concepts and events to enable them; to organize the basic air pollution problems in the framework of air pollution system, analyze and relate them to the atmospheric conditions
Course Description Introduction, historical background of air pollution, atmospheric composition, concentration, air pollution system, sources of air pollution (natural and anthropogenic), major types of air pollution, meteorological aspects of air pollution, heat island, air flow and turbulence, air pollution episodes, health and welfare effects, acidic deposition, Turkish National Air Quality Standards, EU Air Quality Standards, WHO guidelines, air pollution regulations
Course Outcomes By the end of this course
Students should able to:
• Describe the impact of anthropogenic sources on air quality.
• Students will become familiar with basic atmospheric chemistry and air pollution meteorology
• Describe the relationship of pollutants with relevant air quality standards, emission limit values and associated legislation
• Students will be able to formulate and solve simple air pollution models.
• Distinguish between the roles of scientific information and social values in air quality decision making.
• Perform calculations involving conventional units utilized in the air quality science and engineering.
• Describe the relationship between global warming and fossil fuel emissions.
• Outline the different parameters affecting dispersion of gaseous and particulate emission and understand the historical context.
• Explain the different methods of indoor air quality control that can be applied to business and homes.
