Course Objectives 1. Introducing the basics of material knowledge related to industrial product design,
2. Explaining the place of the material in design fields and its effects on the design,
3.Giving information about the production methods and relation between material and design ,
4. Describing the criterias which have effect on the choice of the appropriate materials.
Course Description The place and importance of material knowledge in industrial product design, Physical, mechanical and internal structure properties of materials, Material behaviours, Metals, Ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, Steel, Cast iron and Stainless steel, Wood, Glass, Ceramic, Polymer based material, Polymerization: thermoplastics, thermosets, Plastics: trade plastics, engineering plastics, Composite materials, Other materials used in industrial design, Nano materials, Smart materials, Manufacturing methods of materials, Material selection and applications.
Course Outcomes Student, who passed the course satisfactorily can:
1. Have knowledge about general properties and classifications of materials,
2. Evaluate and select materials in the context of industrial design projects,
3. Have knowledge on relation between design and material and, apply it to their designs.
4. Have knowledge about the relationship between material and production method.
Pre-requisite(s) 1) Attendance 70 % minimum attendance
2)Homework (3), 15 %, 30 %, 15 %
3) Final Exam (1), 40 %


Notes:
In order to enter the final exam, it is mandatory to fulfill the criteria 1,2.
Midterm threshold is 30 pts. and the attendance requirement is %70.
Students who do not meet minimum requirements of midterm assessment and attendance will be assessed as VF.

selection and application for product design.
