MIM 427E - Restoration of Cultural Property
Course Objectives
1. To present principles defined in the field of architectural restoration;
2. To convey different techniques and practice;
3. To discuss in which limit several interventions are compatible with international principles.
Course Description
Restoration of cultural assets requires different approaches specific to building types and construction systems. Within the scope of the course, the components of cultural property are explained and the long history of Istanbul is summarized by emphasizing the assets that could survive. Starting from the archaeological heritage, the conservation problems and restoration of timber and masonry structures are presented, and one of the sub-headings of the architectural conservation area, e.g. adaptive re-use is discussed.
The reasons for the inclusion of cultural assets on the UNESCO List of World Heritage in Danger are discussed
