MIM 203 - Building and Construction in Architecture

Course Objectives

1. To handle the building sub-systems at conceptual level
2. To understand the system principles of building elements and components by analyzing
3. To obtain knowledge about building construction process of building elements and components.
4. To build up the base for the integrated design of building elements and components in the building system.

Course Description

Concepts of building, architectural and construction technology. Introduction of building and construction methods according to the systems approach. Interaction of user-environment-building and introduction of environmental factors and expected performance characteristics in this context. Introduction of building sub-systems. As building sub-systems; analysis, design and construction of building elements. External wall systems (walls in contact with atmosphere and ground), window and door systems, floor systems (ground, intermediate and exposed-soffit floors, suspended ceilings, raised floors), vertical circulation systems (ramps and stairs), roof systems (flat and sloping roofs), partition systems (fixed and moveable partitions). Constructional design requirements, performance criteria, resources. Design principles of building element systems. Traditional and advanced construction methods. Observation and identification: Construction process of building elements. Application-studio work: Analysis and synthesis of building element systems.
