MIM 106E - Structural Mechanics
Course Objectives
1. Ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering.
2. Ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs.
3. Ability to pass the initial steps to identify, formulate and solve structural engineering problems intended for architectural students.
4. Ability to use the techniques and modern engineering tools necessary for architectural engineering practice.
Course Description
Within the context of the course, concept of force, moment, rigid body term, equilibrium principles of forces, introduction of load bearing systems and loads, evaluation of equilibrium problems for determinate systems, configuration of truss systems and determination of member forces, cable forces’ calculation under single and distributed loads, moment of inertia subjects are evaluated. Concept of stress and strain relationship of various structural materials, internal force distribution in structural systems, structural safety, simple and combined strength cases, buckling problem of structural elements under compression are given with some examples of timber, masonry and steel structural systems. At the end of the course, students will be capable of choosing various load bearing systems and designing cross sections of for their architectural design projects.
