Course Objectives To present principles defined in the field of architectural restoration; convey different techniques and implementations; to discuss in which limit several interventions are compatible with international principles.
Course Description Definition and content of cultural property; presentation of international organizations and texts concerning the restoration and preservation of cultural property; UNESCO World Heritage List and World Heritage in Danger List; presentation of different techniques and approaches by exposing the restoration of some important monuments and by visiting two restoration sites in Istanbul; information on problems of architectural conservation.
Course Outcomes Students who pass the course will be able to:
Learn basic notions in architectural conservation,
Understand and appreciate UNESCO’s World Heritage List,
Learn different restoration experiences and techniques,
Discern and criticize interventions that differ according to building types and problems,
Understand the role of different disciplines in restoration which is a
multidisciplinary work;
Raise consciousness about the inspiring/limiting qualities of historic buildings and sites in arch. design.
