# MIM 208E - Structural Analysis& Design I

## Course Objectives

1. Develop an understanding of basic concepts in structural analysis such as equilibrium,
stability, static determinacy and indeterminacy.
2. Develop an understanding of system behavior by analyzing internal forces diagrams.
3. Introduce the basic principles of mechanics regarding work and energy, and their uses
in structural engineering.
4. Introduce the methods used in the analysis of structures within the frameworks of
force and displacement formulations.
5. Provide the knowledge of steel behavior as a structural material and
6. Teach the structural design of steel connections and connection members/design.
7. Provide knowledge for design of beams subjected to tension and/or bending
8. Provide knowledge for design of steel elements subjected to compression.
9. Teach the arrangement of steel trusses and design rules.
10. Teach the multi-storey steel buildings arrangements and to emphasize with examples.

## Course Description

Within the context of the course; concept of structural determinacy and indeterminacy, internal force distribution in determinate systems (continuous beams with hinges, threehinged frames and arches), truss configurations for large spans, deflection problems ofbeams and frames under gravity and/or lateral forces, internal force distribution in
indeterminate systems and important rules to configure a regular structural system are
given with examples of various structural systems. At the end of the course, studentsare expected to be capable of configuring proper structural systems with theirapproximate cross-sectional dimensions. And also within the context of the course;properties of steel as a structural material, sections used in steel structures, Load andResistance Factored Design(LRFD)/Allowable Strength Design(ASD), Design of Steel
Structural members under tension, compression and bending effects, Connection
(Hinged and moment resisting connections) design, Design of steel trusses, FramesSteel slab systems, Arrangement of stability elements in vertical and horizontal planes,Composite structures, Tall steel buildings are evaluated. At the end of the course, students are expected to be capable of configuring steel structural systems in theirarchitectural projects.
