MIM 4042 - Late Ottoman architecture
Course Objectives
- to introduce the products and actors of the architectural milieu in Turkey between 18th and 20th centuries.
- to provoke historically grounded, critical and comparative thinking about “other”/“local” modernities out of the mainstream historiography of architecture.
Course Description
Discussions about modernity and the late Ottoman architecture; Changes in the architectural and urban space during the 18th century; Imperial modernization in the Tanzimat era and activities of foreign architects, introduction of new architectural styles, urban projects; Orientalism in the Ottoman architecture; Ottoman architecture in the world exhibitions, the 1st National Movement; Development of professional identity, architectural education and professional organizations.
