SBP 210E - Urban Sociology
Course Objectives
This course aims to introduce students to topics on the development of the urban sociology field and contemporary urban sociology. It also aims to develop students' capacity to read, write, research and present their work.
Course Description
The course consists of two parts. The first part covers the development of the discipline of urban sociology. This part deals with European-centered theories about the formation of capitalist urban society in the 19th century, American-centered theories about racial-ethnic and class conflict in industrial society in the 20th century, and South American-centered theories about the Third World city in the second half of the 20th century. The second part covers contemporary urban sociology issues. In this section, socio-spatial segregation including class, skill, income, race, ethnicity and gender differences, as well as social exclusion and urban ecological destruction resulting from the transformation of production organization and human-nature relationship, are examined. Methods such as lecture presentation, article presentations, in-class discussion, small tutorial groups and research projects are used in the course.
