Course Objectives
To ensure that architecture students have knowledge about building protection and to learn about the materials used as protection in buildings.
Course Description
Student recognize the elements that affect the life of the building and the relationships of these elements with the building material. Ensuring that students recognize the concept of building protection and the relationship between building protection and materials and define the materials that can be used as protective materials in the building and understand the design, detailing, application and holistic perspective of these materials.
Course Outcomes
In the context of the importance of the building-material-environment relationship, the content of the course is discussed with two basic approaches. First, the environmental factors that cause damage to the structure are explained and the damage mechanisms of these factors are examined depending on the material type. Secondly, the precautions that can be taken in buildings against these environmental factors and the materials that can be used for protection are explained. Protection methods and materials used are classified. In this context, bituminous materials, mineral-based exterior plasters, latex coatings and plasters, silicones, paints, gap-filling chemicals, putties, water retaining tapes, joint fillers, etc. materials are introduced and their applications are explained.
