Course Objectives The aim of this course is to build upon the knowledge gained in Plant Material I by introducing students to additional plant groups and their applications in landscape design. The course objectives are:
• To enhance students’ ability to identify a wide range of plant species and understand their ecological requirements.
• To explore the aesthetic and functional characteristics of shrubs, climbers, groundcovers, aquatic plants, grasses, and wildflowers.
• To introduce specialized plant systems such as green roofs and vertical gardens, and evaluate their role in sustainable design.
• To provide regional knowledge of Turkey’s phytogeographic zones, enabling students to select appropriate species for different landscapes.
• To develop students’ skills in planting design by emphasizing functional, aesthetic, and spatial uses of plants.
Course Description This course is designed as a supplementary module following Plant Material – I, focusing on the identification, ecological requirements, aesthetic characteristics, and landscape uses of additional plant groups. The course explores shrubs and climbing plants, groundcovers, aquatic plants, grasses, and wildflowers. It also introduces specialized plant applications such as green roof species and vertical gardens. Furthermore, the course examines the phytogeographic zones of Turkey to provide students with a regional understanding of plant distribution and suitability for landscape design. Moreover, this course focuses on the design steps involved in planting design, emphasizing the functional and spatial use of plants. It covers the planning and development of urban green spaces and explores the fundamental principles of planting design to create effective and sustainable landscapes.
Course Outcomes • Identify a wide range of plant species and understand their ecological requirements
• Recognize aesthetic and functional characteristics of diverse plant groups
• Select appropriate plants for specific landscape conditions and design goals
• Apply knowledge of Turkey’s phytogeographic zones in regional planting design
• Integrate specialized plant systems like green roofs and vertical gardens into projects
• Design urban green spaces using ecological principles and effective planting strategies
