Course Description
This is an introductory course in the history of architecture. In the first half of the semester, some basic concepts will be discussed, focusing on historical space-making practices in relation to societal changes. Main themes addressed throughout the course include construction materials, building technologies, architectural styles, cultural interactions, and continuity and change in the built environment. The second half of the course introduces the history of architecture around the Mediterranean basin—particularly in present-day Turkey—from the Neolithic to the Late Antique period, with comparisons to contemporary cultures.
