Course Objectives
• To introduce the fundamental concepts of materials and manufacturing methods within the context of industrial design.
• To develop students’ understanding of material and manufacturing method selection in relation to design processes, functional requirements, production efficiency, sustainability, and environmental impact.
• To provide knowledge on shaping, cutting, joining, and surface treatment techniques applied to different classes of materials.
• To familiarize students with both conventional and advanced manufacturing technologies, including additive manufacturing methods.
• To encourage students to investigate current developments, emerging materials, and innovative manufacturing approaches relevant to industrial design practice.
Course Description
This course focuses on the role and significance of materials and manufacturing methods in industrial design. It introduces the physical, mechanical, and internal structural properties of materials, as well as material behavior under different loading and processing conditions. The course covers major material classes including metals, polymer-based materials, wood, glass, ceramics and composite materials.
Conventional manufacturing processes such as forming technologies, panel material forming, molding techniques, extrusion, casting, forging, drawing, blowing, pressing, and lamination are examined alongside cutting, joining, and surface finishing technologies. In addition, the course introduces additive manufacturing technologies, including material extrusion, vat photopolymerization, powder bed fusion, binder jetting, and directed energy deposition, with emphasis on their design freedom, material limitations, production constraints, and applications in prototyping and small-scale production.
Through examples and applications, students gain insight into material and manufacturing method selection based on design intent, functionality, aesthetics, production feasibility, and environmental considerations.
