ICM 122 - History of Architecture

Course Objectives

The aims of the course;
To provide an important introduction on how various cultures, religions, socio-economic structures and regional factors affected the form of building and symbolic meaning of architecture
To discuss the language of architectural form and space and design,
To introduce the integration of architecture, interior and furniture design,
To compare the system of material, building structure, construction systems and technology of the different civilizations studied.

Course Description

A survey of styles, their relations, influences, and continuity in western cultures starting from the prehistoric times to 19th century; examples of religious, representative and public buildings within the context of their social and cultural framework; painting, sculpture and minor arts, their relationship with architecture; construction and plan types, interior design and decoration.
