Course Objectives
1. Giving information on plastics which gain more importance in industry.
2. Teaching about varieties and properties of the plastics.
3. Giving information about plastic materials and design principles.
4. Teaching about the production methods of the plastics.
5. Giving information about determining the appropriate plastic kind and the production methods for different designs.
Course Description
Polymeric Materials, General characteristics of plastics, The place and importance of plastics in industrial product design, Description of principal types of plastics, thermosets, thermoplastics, commodity plastics, Design Principles for plastics, Production Methods for plastics, Injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming compression and transfer molding, Rotational Molding, Blow Molding, Rolling, Casting, Foams, Joining methods, Composite materials, Reinforced plastics and types of reinforcement.
Course Outcomes
Student, who passed the course satisfactorily can;
1. Learn plastics,
2. Learn the manufacturing and the use of different kinds of plastics answering assorted needs,
3. With the knowledge on engineering features of the composite materials, learn to use them in appropriate places,
4. Learn to design products according to the material characteristics of plastics.
