MIM 271 - Theory of Structures

Course Objectives

1. To introduce various load bearing systems, their components, supports and different type of loads acting on these structures.
2. To teach how to idealize structures and to provide knowledge configuring stable load bearing systems.
3.To Introduce statically determinant structures and to teach how to calculate internal forces of them.
4. To provide knowledge evaluating deflection shapes of structural systems and to teach how to calculate elastic deformations.
5.To Introduce statically indeterminate structures and to teach how to calculate internal forces of them.

Course Description

Basic Concepts, Analysis of Statically Determinate Structures Under Static Loads and Internal Force Diagrams, Simply Supported Beams, Overhanged beams, Cantilevers and Frames, Continuous Beams with Hinges, Three-Hinged Arches and Frames, Trusses, Deflections Using Energy Methods: Principle of Virtual Work, Statically Indeterminate Structures, Analysis of Statically Indeterminate Structures by the Force Method, Displacement Method of Analysis: Moment Distribution (Cross Method).
