Course Objectives
1. To introduce the major -ism s of art history in the 20th century Europe and US
2. To teach to identify the influence of these movements on art
3. To compare the developments in art and design in the same period and find its contextual
reasons
Course Description
A revolt against all forms of naturalism: the quest for subjectivist and objectivistic solutions,
psychoanalysis, primitivism, discovery ofnon-European cultures, Fauvism, Matisse, German
Expressionism, The Blue Rider, Cubism, Futurism, total abstraction and impact of photography;
interwar years: Dadaism, Surrealism, Constructivism, the International style, Frank Lloyd
Wright, The Bauhaus and Le Corbusier, art and revolution,Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art,
Minimal and Conceptual art, Photorealism, Modernism and Post Modernism.
Course Outcomes
Student, who passed the course satisfactorily can:
1. Evaluate the visual and reading material about works of art
2. Identify the key developments of 20th century art and design, set against political, social, and
technological developments
3. Understand the interaction of contemporary art and design
