Course Objectives 1) To teach the microbial energy systems
2) Provide general info for metabolism of microorganisms
3) To teach water and wastewater microbiology, problems related to treatment and alternatives for solving problems.
4) To teach experimental procedures related to environmental microbiology
Course Description Chemical structure of cells and organic matter. Microorganisms in wastewater treatment. Microbial energy generation. Metabolic classification of microorganisms. The central metabolic pathways. Aerobic and anaerobic metabolisms. Kinetics of bacterial growth. Quantitative description of growth processes. Factors affecting growth. The role of microorganisms in wastewater treatment processes. Problem of sludge settleability in activated sludge processes.
