Course Objectives
The course objectives are to develop a basic understanding of
1. the mechanism that lead to the formation and emissions of air pollutants
2. air pollution sources, classification systematics and types of air pollution sources (Combustion, industrial, mobile and other)
3. unit operations in air pollution control,
4. air pollution control applications and best available technologies for different pollution sources,
5. air pollution emission standards and legal implementations for different pollution sources.
Course Description
Sources of air pollution and classification criteria. Unit operations and principles in air pollution control. Combustion sources: Classification, Formation and determination of the emissions, Emission Factors, Legal assessment, Control and treatment, Best available technologies. Industrial sources: Classification criteria, Highly polluting industries, Operations and processes, Pollution profiles, Emission factors, Legal assessment, Control and best available treatment technologies for important industries. Mobile sources: Classification according to emissions, Legal assessment, Pollution control, Control in the source.
Course Outcomes
Students who are successfully finish this course will:
I. identify the general properties of different air pollution sources;
II. understand the basic properties of different kinds of pollution sources;
III. understand the mechanisms used and general principles of control technologies used for main air pollutants for different air pollution sources;
IV. have a background on the general applications of air pollution control and treatment technologies;
V. determine and design of a control system or strategy for emission reductions in a source;
VI. understand the legal aspects of air pollution control and legal limits attributed to air pollution control;
VII. increase their communication skills in Turkish by by preparing a termwork on air pollution sources and control and presenting it in the class.
