Course Objectives
The objectives are to develop a basic understanding in the following areas:
1. unit operations in air pollution control,
2. emission standards and legal implementations for different air pollution sources,
3. air pollution control applications and best available technologies for different sources,
4. design of air pollution control systems for different pollution sources.
Course Description
General principles in air pollution control. Measurement methods and emission standards. Unit operations and processes: Hood Design, Settling, Centrifuge, Filtration, Condensation, Adsorption, Absorption, Thermal/Catalytic Oxidation, Thermal/Catalytic Reduction, Pyrolysis. Control systems and their design. Combustion emissions control, legal implementations, best available technologies. Industrial air pollution control, legal implementations and best available technologies for important industries. Mobile emissions control, legal implementations and practices on catalytic convertors.
Course Outcomes
Students who successfully finish this course will:
I. Have a background information on the general applications of air pollution control and treatment technologies;
II. Understand the source-based pollution control and learn the best available technologies for the treatment;
III. Determine the appropriate control system or strategy and design a control system for emission reductions in a source;
IV. Understand the legal aspects of air pollution and its control and corresponding legal practices.
