Course Objectives
1. To present basic chemical treatment processes (oxidation-reduction, precipitation, complexation, etc.)
2. To present major applications of chemical treatment processes in environmental engineering (softening, disinfection, taste & odor control, heavy metal and phosphorous removal, etc.)
Course Description
Introduction to chemical processes; chemical precipitation and crystallization; heavy metal removal; phosphate precipitation, hardness removal, fluoride removal; stabilization of water; chemical oxidation; oxidants; oxidation of iron and manganese, organics removal, color removal, odor and taste control, sulfide oxidation, cyanide oxidation, chromium reduction; fundamentals of corrosion and corrosion control methods; disinfection.
Course Outcomes
1. Chemical precipitation theory
2. Mechanism and kinetics of crystallization. Factors affecting solubility.
3. Applications of chemical precipitation: Hardness and metal removals
4. Applications of chemical precipitation: Phosphate and fluoride removals; Stabilization of water
5. Chemical oxidation theory
6. Common chemical oxidants. Applications of chemical oxidation: Iron and manganese removal, organics removal, color removal, odor and taste control, sulfide oxidation, cyanide oxidation, chromium reduction
7. Disinfection: chemistry, principles, definitions
8. Common disinfection methods, factors affecting disinfection
9. Fundamentals of corrosion, corrosion control methods
