Course Objectives
1. To introduce the fundamental concepts of marine ecosystems,
2. to introduce the fundamental concepts of freshwater ecosystems,
3. to provide the ability of applying the knowledge of marine and freshwater systems gained in the course in understanding and solving problems encountered in Environmental Engineering
Course Description
Introduction to marine and lake sciences. Specifications of water. Temperature, salinity and density profiles. Solar radiation and its importance. Mixing in marine environments. Marine biology. Lake morphometry. Importance of mixing and thermal stratification in lakes. Dissolved oxygen and nutrient sources and profiles. Eutrophication. Acidification. Stream order. Wetland classification. Major biogeochemical cycles (carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, dissolved oxygen).
Course Outcomes
Students who pass the course will learn:
I. water cycle and important properties of water, impact of salinity, temperature, pressure and density on the properties of water,
II. the fate of solar radiation in water and its importance for aquatic life,
III. fundamentals of marine sciences including the properties of major marine systems like oceans, estuaries, coastal lagoons, etc.
IV. the factors like winds, waves, tides and currents affecting the transport and mixing of water
V. marine biology,
VI. physical properties of lakes and classification based on different factors, calculating lake volume, importance of stratification, eutrophication, acidification, and associated problems,
VII. basic knowledge on streams and wetlands,
VIII. the biogeochemical cycles including carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and oxygen,
IX. to assess from every angle and present a selected marine or freshwater system using the knowledge acquired throughout the course.
